TANAC FROM THE ISLAND OF SUSAK

Choreography: Ivan Dabac
Music: Jadran Radonić

The small island of Susak in the northern Adriatic is known for its short colorful women's costumes. According to tradition, the women from this island shortened their skirts (considered the first "miniskirts" in Europe) more and more in order to delay the departure of their husbands – the sailors. Tanac is danced in two opposite lines accompanied by a special instrument - the bellows. It was danced during church holidays and other festivities, and is characterized by the sharp movements of the male dancers and the long spins of the female dancers.
