THE BARANJA DANCES

Choreography: Sulejman Muratović
Music: Đorđe Begu

In the plains, in the extreme northeast of the Republic of Croatia, near the Hungarian border, live the Croats of Baranja who have woven a part of Hungarian folklore into their dance tradition and costumes. This area is characterized by closed wheel dance, often called after the song that is sung along to, and are accompanied by bagpipes or tambourines. Their liveliness, song and cheering of the dancers have become a trademark of the Pannonian identity.
