DUBROVNIK CONTRA DANCES

Choreography: Branko Šegović
Music: Đorđe Begu

Contra dances developed from English country dance and from the 17th century spread as a social dance first through France and then across Europe all the way to Dubrovnik. It is recorded that the people of Dubrovnik developed as many as seven contra dances, i.e. special dances of this type. Contra dances are performd in pairs facing each other in two chain rows, in a circle or in smaller groups of four. The choreography emphasizes the gracefulness of the dance movements of the female dancers and the restrained dancing style of the men.
